Residential/Commercial Fuel Oil Leaks
Response Services

In the past twenty years, Lord Associates has performed assessment and remediation services at hundreds of different residential, gas station, and commercial business fuel oil leaks in a wide variety of geologic settings. Lord Associates is experienced in effectively assessing and remediating fuel oil releases with sensitivity to all stakeholders, particularly homeowners and the coverage provider. We work with local contractors and government officials to assure complete compliance to all environmental regulations.

Lord Associates employs custom designed and assembled, non-intrusive, groundwater removal/treatment, bio-venting units and other remedial systems to maximize site remediation while minimizing cost and nuisance conditions (e.g., noise, unsightliness) to the property owners, abutors and the general environment.

"Lord Associates was extremely responsive to my environmental needs. They were courteous and professional. They solved my environmental problem. I am totally satisfied with Lord Associates. They are great communicators. I hope I never have to use environmental consultants again, but if I do I will be sure to use Lord Associates."

Soil contaminated with No. 6 fuel oil is removed from beneath the first floor of a former industrial facility. When access is possible, and the impacted area is within reach, physical removal is often the most effective and direct method of reclamation.

Appropriately sized remediation systems can be effective if deployed properly. In this case a groundwater removal oil/water separation and bioremediation system was installed in a garage/basement area where access was tight.

Oil spills in residential buildings can present large challenges because of access problems. In this case a sub-slb soil vapor extraction system was deployed to remove residual contaminants which had previously been delineated in a relatively small area.

Residential oil leaks can also present problems outside the building footprint. When a leak is found to be historical and of unknown volume, it is important to delineate the extent of the impacts. In some cases, access for sub-surface investigation is largely limited and therefore drilling equipment and methods must be selected carefully.

Below are some specific projects and their results:

  • Enhanced bioremediation was used in an environmentally sensitive setting in response to a release of No. 2 fuel oil. Remedial additives were combined with site groundwater and re-applied into the contaminated area. After 10 months of active remediation the site had been restored to background conditions.

  • Soil vapor extraction (SVE) was deployed at a neighborhood site after gasoline vapors had impacted an abutting commercial facility. Off-gas treatment was accomplished using on-site steam regenerable carbon adsorption. The project was closed after 9 months of remediation, resulting in the elimination of vapors in the impacted building and the recovery of over 850 gallons of gasoline from the subsurface.
